Opt-Out/Waiver: Graduate, Law, International & Nursing Students

Waiver Periods

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Graduate, Law & International Students

Fall - 05/09/2025 - 09/15/2025

Spring/Summer - 11/13/2025 - 02/09/2026

Nursing Students

Fall - 07/05/2025 - 09/15/2025

Spring - 11/13/2025 - 02/09/2026

Summer - 03/15/2026 - 05/18/2026


Waiver Criteria

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements listed below.

Graduate and Law Students

  1. Be active by the first day of the term you are waiving.
  2. The Insurance Carrier must have offices and operate in the US.
  3. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 40 miles of the main UNLV campus.
  4. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
  5. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  6. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  7. Plan must have a Deductible of $4,000 or less.
  8. Must have an unlimited Annual Maximum
  9. Plans must be ACA compliant in order to be considered for a health insurance waiver.

If your private health insurance plan meets the criteria you are eligible to apply for a waiver of the UNLV Student Health Insurance Plan. Have the following information ready before you begin your waiver application.

  • Your medical ID card
  • Your UNLV ID number

 

International Students
To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements listed below.

  1. Be active by the first day of the term you are waiving.
  2. Plan must have offices and operate in the US.
  3. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 40 miles of the main UNLV campus.
  4. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
  5. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  6. Must provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  7. Must have an unlimited Annual Maximum.
  8. Plan must have a Deductible of $4,000 or less.
  9. Cannot require the member to pay out of pocket for services and submit for reimbursement.
  10. Plan must include proof of medical evacuation coverage of $100,000 or more and repatriation coverage of $25,000 or more.
  11. Plans must be ACA compliant in order to be considered for a health insurance waiver.

  5. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  6. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  7. Must have an unlimited Annual Maximum.
  8. Plan must have a Deductible of $4,000 or less.
  9. Plans must be ACA compliant in order to be considered for a health insurance waiver.
  10. Must have Fluid Exposure coverage.
  11. Must have Needle Stick coverage.
